PhDArts offers an international, high-level doctorate in art and design at Leiden University and the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, The Netherlands. The PhDArts research trajectory consists of two elements: individual research and participation in the doctoral study programme. An appropriate team of supervisors is sought for each doctoral student. The doctoral study programme, which consists of lectures, seminars, trainings, and workshops, is an essential part of the research environment in which the student undertakes his or her research.

Research in and through art is an inseparable part of the artistic or design practice of the researcher. Consequently, research in art (as opposed to research about art, such as art history) does not have a set goal or expected result, nor are there predetermined general procedures. The outcome of the research is open. This openness is a condition for conducting research in art and design.
There is a unique relationship between the artist/designer, the research method and the outcome of the research. This research is only possible thanks to the artist's artistry and, the other way round, the artist develops his artistry through the research. The outcome is therefore an artistic product, combined with a discursive product, the dissertation, which does justice to the artistic one.
This final result of this type of research, which is by its nature speculative, cannot be restricted to one particular form. The criteria for the form the research may take are therefore kept as open as possible. Also, there is no fixed ratio between dissertation and artistic production. The requirements that the research must satisfy and the researcher's methodology derive in part from the assignment that the artist or designer has given himself.
AdmissionApplicants must have a Master's of Arts Degree, proof of study at a comparable level or a strong and independent artistic practice. The final decision on admission rests with Leiden University, which will also award the PhD. The application must be submitted in English.

Based in the world's most influential university of art and design, the School of Humanities Research Programme offers a unique opportunity to undertake scholarly research of the highest quality in a wholly postgraduate environment. Applications are welcomed from students with an art or design history background, from practitioners who wish to pursue a critical engagement with their specific discipline, and from students from outside the art-school environment who wish to specialise in art or design research.

We offer a broad range of supervisory expertise that extends across the whole spectrum of architecture and urbanism, fine and applied art, communications, design, fashion and textiles. This allows us considerable versatility in the kinds of research that we support. We welcome applications for MPhil and PhD either by thesis or practice in areas of Humanities research. Students are based in a specific programme and also participate in a school-wide research programme. Critical Writing in Art & Design develops critical perspectives on contemporary art and design. Students undertake an individual programme of studies which results in the production of a thesis. Other kinds of written works will be considered if they fit within the College's definitions of 'research by project'. We are particularly interested in encouraging new thinking into aspects of the history and contemporary practice of criticism, critical theory in art and design, the changing face and content of the media, and word and image relations. We are also keen to support interdisciplinary work (in, for instance, the borderlands between art and anthropology or between graphic design and journalism).
Critical & Historical Studies supports a research programme that is intimately linked to our role as the college-wide provider of critical and historical discourse for all studio-based MA students at the RCA. CHS supervisors are authorities in the disciplines of architecture and interiors, design, fine and applied arts, fashion and communications, and we welcome applications to explore and develop these disciplines, and any combination of them, from an historical, theoretical, or critical perspective. In particular we encourage proposals that deal with contemporary aesthetics; the history & theory of photographic practice, of performance, of craft and of design; and the historical study of cities, transport, technology, and infrastructure.
Curating Contemporary Art facilitates research on all aspects of curating from exhibition history to transnational issues of curating to a critical engagement with curating as a profession, a discipline or even a way of looking at the world. Our programme is unique in its ability to provide support in respect to both practice and theory. Through 'research by project,' practical curating can be integrated into research projects and developed towards academic standards of excellence. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the interdisciplinary framework of the School and to participate in research activities throughout the College. The CCA programme prides itself in its long-established curatorial tradition, in its international network and its translocal outlook.
V&A/RCA History of Design welcomes research topics in design history and material culture, ranging from the 15th century to the present day, across global geographies. The programme is run in conjunction with the V&A Museum and offers unique access to curators and collections and is supported by team of course tutors based at both institutions. Our subject expertise ranges across fashion and textiles, architecture and interiors, design and craft, materials, manufacture and making, trade and exchange. We are particularly interested in research in the areas of Renaissance and Early Modern design history; Asian design history, and modern and contemporary subjects.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) Master of Arts in New Arts Journalism program reinterprets and transforms the skills of a traditional journalist into the multitasking demands of a contemporary arts journalist where art writing, editing, and design skills are intertwined. Unlike journalism schools that add an arts emphasis, SAIC is a vibrant school of art and design in which New Arts Journalism students can combine the in-depth study of arts and journalism, and work closely with artists, art historians, and cultural critics.

• The Master of Arts in New Arts Journalism program focuses on refining the technical aspects of writing in print and online, and provides workshop critiquing by peers and faculty.
• The program's curriculum includes courses in print production and design, photography, video, web-based formats, and the history and theory of contemporary art. Coursework also covers the format of reviews, features, critical essays, investigative reporting, and opinion pieces, in the context of cultural journalism.
• The New Arts Journalism faculty is composed of working critics and designers from major local and national publications.

• A second-year internship through SAIC's Cooperative Education Internship Program allows students to work in a professional environment with various local and national companies. The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's (SMFA), Post-Baccalaureate program is an intensive year of studio art study and practice for recent college grads, mid-career professionals coming from another focus or practicing artists wishing to expand their ongoing studio work. This one-year certificate program provides excellent preparation for graduate-degree studies in the arts field or independent practice as a working artist.

SMFA shares its campus with the internationally renowned Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—one of only three schools nationally that are partnered with a major museum. Our students have unsurpassed access to an encyclopedic collection of art and the Museum's curatorial, conservation and history departments.
Post-Bac students design their own path of study with close mentoring from faculty and are encouraged to explore across media. All Post-Bacs receive private studios and weekly studio visits by SMFA faculty—who are all practicing artists—offer students the chance to obtain critiques and advice on a personalized level. The Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Pennsylvania is focused on the professional development of visual artists. Through workshops, seminar courses, international residency opportunities and interactions with curators, writers and artists, the program provides an open framework to foster independent methods of artistic research. In addition to seminars within the Fine Arts department, graduate students are encouraged to pursue topics of science and the humanities through an impressive selection of courses offered across the university.

PennDesign offers a range of tuition fellowships to recognize the merit and diversity of applicants to the program. Teaching Assistantships are offered to all incoming students. In addition, several students engage in Research Assistantships, working directly with the faculty on exhibition projects, or participate in a program through which they develop a syllabus and teach a foundation-level studio course at Penn.
